Basketball Division 1
MEN:
Souths Sharks (78) DEFEATED MD1 Renegades (52)
The Undefeated sharks were out to prove a point once again, and at the hot hands of Lachie Inkson (24) and Tyrone Kay (19) were able to move right on past the Renegades with ease. For the losing side, sharp shooter Kobey Sager produced another 20-plus point performance with 22, taking his season average to an impressive 27 points per game.
North Mackay Magic (81) DEFEATED Renegade Gators (61)
North Magic were out to break away from the midpack of the ladder with their game against the Gators, registering one of their biggest wins of the year. It seems Mackay must be struggling with electricity given how many can shoot the lights out, as Max Cain went big with a season high 38 points to help his side across the line. For the Gators, River Davidson backed up last week’s 20 point game with 18 of his own.
DGS Renegades (49) DEFEATED BY Hoop Dreaming (88)
Currently sitting second on the table, the men from Hoop Dreaming came out with authority to dash the hopes early of one of the bottom sides in the DGS Renegades. With arguably one of the best shooters in the comp on their side, the Dreamers fed Kye Medhurst all night long to see him rack up 36 points in the win. For the DGS Renegades Beauden Gilbank top scored with 14 of his own.
WOMEN:
Bobcats (44) DEFEATED BY North Mackay Magic (52)
The Bobcats were coming for an upset last Monday night against the Magic, who were sitting just above them on the ladder before this game. Chasing their first win of the year the Bobcats kept the ball in the hands of Olena Teteruk, who managed to sink 18 points on their way to a tough loss. For the Magic, young star Cheyenne Bobongie came back with 21 of her own to cement herself as one of if not the best young shooter in Mackay.
South Sharks (65) DEFEATED Renegades (46)
The South Sharks woke up and chose a winning mentality, leaving no stone unturned in their 19 point win to remain undefeated through the first five games of the year. With a combination of Nikita van Wyk (20) and Monique Bobongie (27) it was always going to be hard for the Renegades to get into the game. For the losing side, Phoebe Holmes was the shining hope with 16 points of her own.
DBCT Cup Cricket
Norths (8/190) DEFEATED Brothers (All out 151)
Norths and Brothers were fighting out for the third spot on the DBCT Poole cup ladder, and tasked with batting first, Norths got off to a shaky start. Losing both openers early it was up to the middle order to steady the ship, and with big knocks from Mason Kohler (59) and Kerrod Tortora (37) the Norths settled well. With the ball, the most impressive of the weekend came also from the Norths side, with Christopher Dunn taking four wickets for five runs.
Souths Sharks (8/190) DEFEATED BY Pioneer Valley (7/195)
The closest game of the weekend came between the two bottom sides, as both were searching for their first win of the year. A hot start is always important, and Pioneer Valley got off to a steady start. With one golden duck in the order it was time to enter a sleeping giant in Jack Sambell who smacked 65 runs off 64 deliveries, with one of the best innings of the weekend. Chasing hard, the Sharks’ opener Shaun Austin got it off to a flyer with 87 of his own before things began to fall apart toward the end. A great knock from Floris Duvenhage was almost enough, however Pioneer Valley hung on for a great victory.
Magpies (9/123) DEFEATED BY Walkerston (4/129)
It was the much hyped matchup of the weekend - the battle of the undefeated. The Magpies were sent in to bat first and decided to keep star Adam Zurvas coming in third, leaving the openers some time to get it going. Brother Benny got off to a great start, however the early wicket of Hancock was the beginning of a spiral for the Magpies. Some quality bowling at the hands of Scotty Randles, who ended with five for 30, began to rip through the order and leave the team on the back foot. If it was not for some final batting heroics from Liam Zurvas and his 37 it would have been a disaster. Walkerston came out steady, with opener Neil Gustavson settling early, but it was Zurvas who was shining with the ball and taking some early wickets. Walkerston and in particular Chris McEldowney ran away big winners, now being the only remaining team undefeated in the competition.
