Mackay
Don't miss out on the headlines from Mackay. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Is it just me, or is Mackay feeling like the sporting hub of central Queensland? We were once again treated to a variety of both new and big events across the week, as many come into Monday with big momentum heading into a new week.
Cricket:
North Qld Women Open Zone Championships
This past many of Mackay Crickets best women took part in the Zone Championships, facing off against a hard hitting North Queensland outfit to take out the zone title, with some selected as apart of the North Queensland Country team for an upcoming tournament.
Making this the fourth consecutive year of taking the title, the Central Queensland women only dropped one game in the three game series, steadying after a slower start in game one.
Starring with the Bat for our Central Queensland outfit was Tracee Williamson, also coming in second in the Championship player rankings for the weekend.
Basketball:
Womens
WD1 Renegades (57) DEFEAT WD1 Bobcats (55)
The Renegades and the Bobcats currently sit at the bottom of the table in Division I basketball, and as the bobcats chased their first win of the year they fell one basket short of securing it. Notable for the push were Ruby Crouch (14pts), Olena Teterul (13pts) and Jaylah Ape (12pts).
For the renegades, win number 2 might start to get the wheels in motion for this side, with Charli Bliss responsible for replacing the stadium lights after a huge 25pt outing to across the line.
WD1 South Sharks (52) DEFEAT North Mackay Magic (34)
The South's are the team to beat this season and came out for round four still undefeated, as the 1-2 punch of the Bobongie duo went at it again combining for 28 points as they cruised past the magic. For the magic, Laycee Carter producer her best game of the year with a 14 point haul trying to peg back the lead the Sharks set out early.
Men:
South Sharks (72) DEFEAT Norths Magic (65)
This was like a heavyweight title fight. Now, i'm unsure how much defence was being played but a few players seemed to have the green light to shoot as will as they stacked on big individual scores. For the undefeated Sharks it was Lachie Inkson (22pts) who kept the side afloat in scoring. Across to the Magic (who now drop to fourth on the table) it was star shooter Max Cain with his biggest game of the year taking control for a 31 piece to try and get his side over the line.
Under 18 Meteors (47) DEFEATED BY MD1 Renegades (53)
It's a tough gig going up against grown men in basketball, and while the U/18 Meteor side is still chasing that illusive first win, they are edging closer each week. Baxter Norsworthy came to the table for his first game of the year, flushing 12 points during his sides defeat. Moving to the Renegades (who sit third on the table) It was Chef Curr … I mean Kobey Sager who hit the 30 point mark for the second time this year to win with 36 to his name.
MD1 GDS Renegades (52) DEFEATED BY Renegade Gators (59)
That's a whole lot of Renegades on one court. Going up against a familiar opponent the DGS renegards came firing with Josh Harris (18 pts) and William Randell (12) acquainting themselves with the sounds of a swish as they put together a nice combination to try and steal the win. On the other side of the Renegade showdown River Davidson decided his team would not be denied a climb up the ladder, amassing 20 points and sending his clubmates packing.

Netball went around again on Wednesday night, with teams finding their groove and asserting some dominance through the mid part of competition.

Roller Derby:
Across the entire weekend the Mackay City Rollers hosted the first ever RADfest, which was a combination of a roller derby clinic as well as an exhibition for young athletes to not only learn about the sport, but give those who had never tried nor heard of it a chance to experience it from some world class athletes.
A massive congratulations goes out to the organisers in Mackay City Rollers and to resident superstar ‘Squeels’ making time to come back and assist the youth with this project.
NQ Sports people of the year
One of Mackay’s best Junior athletes made the trek to Cloncurry with family in tow hoping to take out the top award for the best Junior Sport Star in the region.
While falling just shy of the nod, Connor Parish was surprised with the Athlete Sporting Excellence award for North Queensland, which is given to athletes who go above and beyond what is expected of them in the sport. A massive congratulations goes out to Connor, his family and the BMX community of Mackay for this awesome achievement.
St Pats Merger:
With Mercy and St Pats merging into one school under the name St Pats, the rugby program has been given a boost, securing a partnership under the NQ cowboys in the form of an Elite Pathways program for the school.
With up to ten students already on development contracts with the club, this is a huge boost to the program and will establish the school as an elite feeder into the professional rankings.
