The Sarina and District Netball Association was able to offer it’s junior players an experience they’ll not soon forget on Monday, as Queensland Firebirds players Ruby Bakewell-Doran and Lara Dunkley made the trek to host a 90-minute clinic.

With more than 120 kids in attendance, the Sarina community certainly showcased its enthusiasm for the sport, with both players saying they were excited to see such a strong level of support.

“The kids get a chance to improve some of their skills, but importantly also just get to know us as well,” Dunkley said.

“I love doing these sorts of clinics, especially when we get to go out into regional areas.

“Grassroots is such a massive part of our game, I know in Netball Queensland it’s been hugely important for them to see that translation from juniors through the ranks.”

Bakewell-Doran echoed the sentiments of her teammate, saying it was important to her that fans of the game get to see their favourite players “in the flesh.”

“It’s great to be out here meeting them rather than just seeing us on TV,” she said.

“It’s an incredible sport and we’re hopeful that the more we play the bigger it gets, but it starts here in the local communities where kids first try the sport.

Sarina association president Lauren Stanger said the club was “extremely excited” to have the opportunity for Bakewell-Doran and Dunkley to impart some wisdom on their young players.

“It’s awesome to see that a small community like this is able to attract these elite athletes to come out and offer their support. We often have more than 300 people here for some of our fixtures so there’s a lot of support for netball in this community,” Stanger said.

“We want to see the town put on the map and this is one of the ways we can do that.”
