Completing seven marathons in seven days is a gruelling week for anyone, but the cause associated with the event attracts hundreds of runners each year.

The child protection service Bravehearts will host its annual 777 event starting on Monday, with seven marathons in seven days across seven cities to raise awareness of child abuse.

The event is traditionally held across Australia, but Covid-19 has forced Bravehearts to host the week across seven Queensland cities instead.

Sarina State High School staff member Brenda Windsor will run in her second Bravehearts event, and said she was excited to be involved in such an important cause again.

“The event is designed to raise awareness of the Bravehearts foundation, and to run for the kids that are too scared to speak up,” she said.

“Since learning about the cause I’ve become so much more passionate about it all, it is an incredibly important event that raises awareness in the wider community.”

Mackay will host the sixth marathon on July 3, with the week starting in Toowoomba on June 28.

From there, runners will travel to Brisbane, Mt Isa, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and then finish on the Gold Coast.

Mrs Windsor is the senior secondary liaison officer at Sarina High, where students and teachers have rallied around her as she prepares for the week of running.

“Some of the kids have said they’ll come down to the Mackay run and get involved as well,” she said.

“My grandkids are students at Sarina State High School, they’ll be running but other students have also said they’ve registered.

“The event has been completely supported by the school and community, the teachers and staff are completely behind me and all the students are really supportive as well.”
