A trio of Mackay’s next generation stars have burst onto the national scene, each claiming a medal at the National All-School Championships in Adelaide.
The first medal came in the women’s under-16 pole vault, where 15-year-old Kayce Hoani-Vince won bronze.
Clearing every height on the first attempt, Hoani-Vince clipped the bar to come home in third place with a 2.75m jump to her name.
Toby Rule run in the men's under-16 3000m earned a silver medal.
Coming into the event, Rule boasted a personal best time of nine minutes and 31 seconds, putting him in the middle of the field in terms of expected results.
Rule’s spirit refused to be broken as he put himself in medal contention, coming into the final 400m with an all out sprint.
Rule managed to edge fractionally ahead of his competitors, to take second with a 30-second personal best of 9:01.
Rule also placed 11th in the 1500m and fourth in the 2000m steeplechase.
Mackay’s fastest track star Mikayla Webb, who was recently named North Queensland’s athlete of the year, took on the 200m, qualifying top three in her heat and going sixth fastest into the finals.
Facing a major head-wind, Webb pushed to the line to storm home as the fourth best 200m runner in the nation.
Two days later she turned her her focus to the 100m event.
Webb competed in the 4x100m relay team for Queensland where the women held off a fast-finishing Western Australia outfit to be crowned national champions.
Two days later, it was almost a case of rinse and repeat from the 200m, as Webb moved on from the heats with ease to qualify in a three-way tie as the second fastest into the finals.
Webb found herself again in a race of inches, holding on for a bronze medal and finishing .002 of a second ahead of fourth place.
