The outpouring of community generosity has smashed all records at the annual Meteors match-worn jersey auction.
Mackay basketball fans showed their love and support for their community of hoopers with more than $30,000 raised in the post-match auction.
The Hamburglar-themed singlets were a part of a McDonald’s initiative to raise money for the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Mackay Base hospital.
Meteors coach Joel Khalu said the community aspect surrounding the club made the event possible.
“We’re lucky in Mackay having agriculture and mining which are two big industries with money around that space, but I think it’s a reflection of the club,” he said.
“People put their hand in their pocket every season to support us, it’s obviously a wonderful cause and it’s something we need in town so for people to do that I thought was pretty special.”
Meteors star Jerron Jamerson’s jersey pulled in an impressive $6000, while Harry Froling combined his jersey with a signed Brisbane Bullets singlet to draw in $2500.
McDonald’s franchisor Niki Ramsay said the community’s generosity had blown her away.
“The community has gone above and beyond with donations. Even before we had an agreement from the hospital, people have been donating,” she said.
“Mackay has been very receptive of the family room idea. It’s absolutely essential that we have one in town for families.
“It will give them a much-needed reprieve from being in a hospital environment constantly.”
