Mackay Cutters’ Hostplus Cup head coach Adam Cuthbertson has backed one of his club’s most intriguing recruits for the 2025 season, as the clubs searches for a strong start to its QRL campaign.
Brenton Baira is a former Mackay junior player who has since spent time in the Dolphins NRL system before eventually finding his way back to North Queensland.
He featured in the Cowboys’ pre-season challenge match against Dolphins in Cairns, and since then has been wildly impressive for the Cutters, scoring four tries in their second trial match against Townsville Blackhawks.
“He started out here at the club, and obviously got noticed by the clubs down in south east Queensland,” Cuthbertson said.
“I thought it was really important for the club to get someone like Brenton back.”
Cuthbertson said there was still plenty of work to be done, but that Baira’s natural gifts and talents were obvious and would be a massive boost to the side.
“Brenton is one of those kids who can pull out some pretty freakish stuff throughout the game,” Cuthbertson said.
“I sound like I’m on repeat but this is a pathway, and our job is to get a guy like this rounded into a player who can play at the top level.
“I’m sure he’s enjoying his time back home, but if he keeps going the way he’s going I’ve got no doubt it won’t be long before he sees another opportunity (at the top level).”
The Cutters are prepping for a big home round 1 clash against CQ Capras at BB Print Stadium, with that match set to get underway at 1.50pm on Saturday.
