Jasmine Peters was more surprised than her dad when she got a contract offer to play Gold Coast Titans football in the NRLW this season.

But while she did not expect the opportunity so soon, she said her father, Marco, was convinced it was a long time coming.

“He was extremely excited, probably more than I was,” she said.

“He showed a lot more emotion than I did because it was still settling in, but he was a proud dad and he said he knew it was going to happen.”

The chance to grace a top-league football pitch is something Peters has dreamed of doing since she started playing rugby league in Mackay as a child.

She said she was excited to absorb as much as she could at the elite level.

“My goal has been to play the best footy I can and learn from each game, that mentality has pushed me to reach these goals much quicker than I thought I would,” she said.

“Preseason will be hard but I love it, I’ve always been the type of person to throw myself into every challenge in front of me.

“The most exciting thing about the whole thing is just to step on the field as an NRLW player, to have that jumper on my back and to represent family and friends.”

The Covid lockdowns across South East Queensland and New South Wales have delayed the start of the NRLW, with the season pushed back to October.

Peters said she had been training in small groups with her new teammates.

“Quite a lot of us live in the same area so we’ve been able to do a bit of circuit training and bodyweight stuff together,” she said.

“We’re in a bit of a limbo at the moment with the season pushed back and restrictions in place, but we should be able to start preseason together at the end of August.”

Peters was not sure where she would be positioned in the side, but said she hoped to lock down an outside back spot.

“We haven’t talked too much about positioning, I’m hoping I can claim right centre as my own,

“At this stage of the year I just want to take everything on board, learn about the group and get up and go when it’s time to train.”
