A hot shooting night from Harry Froling helped secure a runaway victory for the Meteors.
The NBL centre knocked down 20 points in the first quarter, including shooting 6/6 from three, to help Mackay to a 13 point quarter-time lead over Cairns.
Meteors coach Joel Khalu said it was the best shooting performance from the big man he had seen.
“Harry really broke the game open for us, it was unbelievable shooting,” he said.
“He hasn’t had a game where he has shot the ball that well for us, he’s usually hustling in the post for us.”
Froling finished with 40 points, including nine three-pointers, to help Mackay run out 98-79 victors.
Jerron Jamerson had a strong second half to complement Froling’s efforts, scoring 23 of his 29 points after the main break.
“I thought Jerron in the second half was great, we had Harry dominate early, then Jerron took over and made some big plays for us,” Khalu said.
“We’ve got so many threats in our group so I need to make sure everyone gets their chance to contribute, and Harry and Jerron got their chances.”
Mackay’s match against Cairns was the only NBL1 North game to be played after South East Queensland was locked down from Saturday.
Khalu said there was uncertainty surrounding the ending of the season.
“Every game is important now, because at any stage the season could come to an end,” he said.
“The league could finish the season tomorrow and say the top two teams are straight into a grand final, or it’s top four teams only.
“The whole dynamic could change, so it’s really important for us to keep winning games and be in a top two spot in case that does happen.”
