The previous experience of hosting an NRL game has given Mackay organisers great insight into what needs improvement ahead of the region’s upcoming matches.
BB Print Stadium will host the Raiders and Warriors clash on August 27, as well as Raiders and Roosters on September 2.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said added security measures would be introduced after a streaker took to the field in the Eels and Roosters match.
“There’s a few learnings out of the first one, extra security we’ve got to have this time round,” Cr Williamson said.
“There’s a $5 increase to the ticket charge because of that extra security, so that stupid person who started to run around the field just puts an impost on it.”
Bar staff will also be increased after patrons reported waiting in line for 20 to 30 minutes for a drink.
Cr Williamson said he expected private bar staff would not be required, with a preference to keep the proceeds with the Cutters.
“We’d rather keep it all internal, if we put private enterprise into the bar staff that just cuts a lot of money out of the Cutters’ income,” he said.
“What we’re doing is making sure the Cutters have extra assistance, and that assistance around the management of the whole event too.
“I know the last time they ran out of beer just before the game started, then they ran out again just after half time, so they were learnings out of last time and that’s a good learning for the Cutters team.”
Cr Williamson said the cost of luring multiple games to Mackay was paying for itself in the revenue from the matches.
“That (amount invested) is commercial in confidence, but I can tell you we get the gate, we get the food, and we get a clip of the alcohol, but I can tell you that we are covered,” he said.
“So long as we get around 4500-4800 people through the gate, we’re covered.
“The deal we did was two games and we’re really happy with three, I think it’s a great outcome for Mackay.”
