A pandemic could not dampen the spirits of Mackay’s Adrenalin Cheer and Dance who flipped their way to the top at the recent virtual national championships.

Club owner and head coach Kelly Munt was beaming with pride as she shared her teams’ impressive feats at the 2021 Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation Virtual Nationals Competition at the weekend.

Adrenalin’s senior level two team Untamed capped off an undefeated 2021 season by not only winning the Level Two State Championships earlier this year but also taking out the National Championship title at the AASCF Virtual Nationals competition.

“I’m incredibly proud,” Munt said.

“Those kids were mostly new to that level when they started the season. They had to overcome a lot of boundaries, learn a lot of new skills, and were more or less a completely new team in terms of not having worked with each other before.

“To end up at the national championships at the end of the season, it was a complete turnaround.

“Although we work hard, like any other sport, we never go in expecting grand things – we just do our best.”

Adrenalin also competed at the Aussie Gold Internationals on the Gold Coast in October, where they won four of the top 10 highest scoring cheer teams.

“We tied fourth with our own teams (Dreams and Vipers), placed sixth (Untamed) and seventh (Evolution) … with the Untamed team taking the spot of sixth overall,” Munt said.

Adrenalin also had six other teams competing at the nationals, with all placing against the best competitors from across Australia.

“Three of our (state champion) stunt groups qualified into the nationals earlier in the season and all those groups ended up winning at nationals as well,” Munt said.

“We have four groups that are national champions … the stunt groups competed in level two, three and four and we took out the title (in all three levels).

“We only had four cheer teams enter and we got first, second, and two third places.

“The juniors took out third in the senior division (after mistakenly being placed in the higher division) … they did fantastic.”

Junior level one team Scorpions also took out second place in their division, and senior level four team Dreamers and Vipers claimed third place in their divisions.

“We’re coming off the back of a season with a lot of questions with the pandemic, with sporting clubs shut down and training via Zoom,” Munt said.

“We lost a lot of athletes from the team and for the kids that hung in there … we couldn’t have asked for a better result.

“This is the first season since 2019 so we weren’t sure where we’d sit competition-wise but now we’re very confident going into 2022 that our Mackay teams will look pretty impressive and be something the community should look out for.”

Munt thanked her coaching team and her athletes for all their hard work, and encouraged aspiring cheer and dance athletes to sign up for the 2022 season.
