Ship’s crew member east of Mackay rescued by RACQ Capricorn helicopter

A rescue helicopter was sent on a 500 mile round-trip after a crew member on a ship east of Mackay fell ill with chest and abdomen pains.

A bulk carrier crew member 90 miles off the coast of Mackay called in for help after they fell ill with chest and abdominal pains.

Queensland Health called in the RACQ Capricorn Rescue helicopter about midday Friday.

An RACQ Capricorn Rescue spokeswoman said the chopper left its base in Rockhampton about 12.30pm, travelling a whopping 500-mile round trip.

The Rescue 300 stopped in Mackay to refuel before heading 90 miles offshore, landing on the bulk carrier.

The crew member was taken on board the chopper and flown back to Mackay where paramedics were waiting to help.

The crew member remained stable throughout the flight and taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

The Rescue 300 refuelled a second time before heading home to Rockhampton.
