A Mackay man found inside a sedan that rolled off a major road west of Mackay has been flown to Townsville hospital.

The 37-year-old man and sole occupant of the vehicle was found trapped inside a Toyota sedan off Mackay-Eungella Rd about 3.15pm Tuesday, February 8.

He was flown to Townsville University Hospital in a critical condition on Friday, February 11.

A TUH spokeswoman said the man was listed as being in a stable condition.

Police had initially appealed for any motorists in the area in the 12 hours before the vehicle was reported to come forward.

But that timeframe had since been revised to between 5am and noon, and motorists travelling in an easterly direction from Gargett towards Mackay, to check their dashcams.

The man was cut free from the badly damaged sedan and flown to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition.

He suffered serious head, chest and arm injuries, and was cut from the overturned vehicle.

Footage from the RACQ CQ Rescue chopper showed the remote stretch of the road, over the hill, on the eastern side towards Gargett.

The chopper was unable to land nearby because of dense tree coverage in the area.

The helicopter landed on the oval at Pinnacle, 54km west of Mackay and a few

kilometres from the scene, to wait for a Queensland Ambulance crew to transport the patient.

Police said the sedan came to a stop in a gully.

“Officers are requesting anyone who was travelling in an easterly direction from Gargett towards Mackay between approximately 5am and midday on February 7, to check dash cam footage as they are travelling over the hill between Gargett and Benholme,” police said.

Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
