IMAGINE a bowling ally, museum or multi-level car park.
These are some of the ideas Mackay residents have dreamt up for what they think the vacant city cinema building should become.
The historic building has been a well-loved movie house for more than 45 years before closing its doors to the devastated Mackay community in December last year.
Yesterday, the Daily Mercury revealed Mackay Regional Council has given a green light to an application to demolish the building.
While it has approval, Event Cinemas, who owns the building, said no plans had been confirmed for the site.
We put the call out to our readers and asked what they would like to see the area become.
Ben Sunshine said it would be a “shame” to loose the Art Deco architecture if it was demolished.
“Why not have a rule that the new building be designed with Art Deco in mind, with the same colours from the old building?,” he proposed.

Allan Hovad suggested the relocation of the Mackay Leisure Centre.
Andrea Pozzaon, on the other hand, said she could see the space becoming a multi-level car par to boost accessibility and parking across the CBD.
A number of people suggested turning the space into something for the region’s kids.
Their suggestions included an aquarium, a museum and even a bounce house.
