The shopping precinct at Holts Rd and Mackay Bucasia Rd could sprawl further into rural land with plans to build another service station.
An application has been lodged to build Beaconsfield Service Centre, a four-bowser service station and a 3000 sqm showroom precinct next-door to Bunnings North Mackay.
The 22.32ha site at Lot 6 Beaconsfield Rd, Beaconsfield is currently zoned as rural.
Reel Planning’s application, submitted on behalf of Onefin Property, states the project would be built over two stages and include 91 car park spaces, with left-in, left-out access from Mackay Bucasia Rd.
The application referenced an Economic Impact Assessment which found Mackay had “an estimated undersupply of large format retail and non-retail showroom floorspace in the order of (about) 14,500 sqm”.
“Over time with continued population growth, this undersupply is projected to increase to over 40,000sq m by 2041,” the application noted.
“It is worth noting that given the predominantly trade-based economy throughout Mackay, demand for large format retail and non retail showroom floor space is likely to exceed the Australian average.”
The EIA further found Mackay had a shortage of about eight fuel service stations with Beaconsfield Service Centre to create about 260 jobs “both directly and indirectly as a result of the subject development”.
