A man facing court in Queensland has had his matters delayed after New South Wales police officially requested extradition to charge him with his father’s murder.

Stephen Alan Warne allegedly stabbed his dad Jamie Culgan in a Leumeah apartment in south Sydney, a foul odour leading to the discovery of a body on March 14, 2022.

Just months later, he is also accused of stabbing a fellow lodger at Gecko’s Rest budget hostel in the Mackay CBD on Sunday, May 8, 2022.

Warne did not appear in Mackay District Court on Thursday, remaining in jail on remand, but his barrister Scott McLennan said the defence were taking time to adjust.

“I learned this morning there’s an extradition request in relation to a charge of murder from New South Wales,” Mr McLennan said.

“So I’m going to have some conversations with my learned friend about this matter and figure out what to do.”

Crown prosecutor Jane Shaw said there had been efforts by the parties to resolve Warne’s charges, noting the matter “is a serious matter before this court”.

Warne is charged in Queensland with one count of unlawful wounding and one count of committing acts intending to maim/disfigure/disable.

His two previous applications for bail were both rejected and he has been in custody on remand for over two years.

The matter was adjourned to July 30 for mention.

Ed’s note: This story has been amended to clarify that while NSW police have obtained a warrant to charge Stephen Alan Moore with murder and requested his extradition, he is yet to be formally charged with his father’s murder.
