A mother of three convicted of home invasion against a sex worker donned a disguise to steal from a popular Mackay hair salon.

After going to a bank, Sahriab Kubi Day-Nawakie went to her car and dressed herself in sunglasses and a hat before entering M Hair and Co in Caneland Central on January 29, 2022.

Day-Nawakie entered the hair salon, taking $478 worth of hair extensions and leaving without paying a cent.

It was far from the first time the 25 year old had been caught stealing, pleading guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court on March 28 to nine different theft charges dating back to 2019.

On May 17, 2021, Day-Nawakie attempted to walk out of Rural View Woolworths with a trolley full of goods.

Someone intervened and the mother ditched the trolley and left the shop, but in her rush forgot her wallet in the trolley and police were able to identify her.

The court heard some of Day-Nawakie’s more serious offences included stealing a phone from a woman at That Sapphire Shop at The Leap and stealing twice after a previous conviction.

Nicks IGA, Mount Pleasant Dan Murphy’s, Chemist Warehouse, Kooyong Liquorland and Rural View Woolworths were all victims to Day-Nawakie’s light fingers.

Police prosecutor Hannah Beaumont said Day-Nawakie was also found with a handbag and mobile phone which were reasonably expected to have been stolen.

The mother was also found with marijuana in June 2020 and again in July 2021, and caught drug-driving while on her P-plates on Wellington St on October 24, 2021.

Day-Nawakie pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court to receiving tainted property, drug-driving and drug possession.

Solicitor Peter Clark said his client had a rough upbringing and had fallen pregnant young.

“She was introduced to drugs at age 18, mostly cannabis, but she denies addiction,” Mr Clark said.

“She describes symptoms of anxiety and depression but tells me she has no formal diagnosis.”

Mr Clark said his client had a good relationship with her father and her stealing offences only started after his death in 2016.

The court heard Day-Nawakie had been in custody since March 15.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said Day-Nawakie “really needed to start thinking” about her children.

“Because you will end up in jail if you keep going like this,” Ms Hartigan said.

“They need you there, they’re only little.”

She was sentenced to nine months jail wholly suspended for nine months and ordered to pay $1328 restitution for the stolen phone.

Day-Nawakie was disqualified from driving for three months and fined $300.

A conviction was recorded.
