A young Mackay man was allegedly drink driving when he caused a horror crash that left a mum with life threatening injuries, “destroying” that family’s Christmas, police say.
Forensic Crash Unit officers have revealed more details about what happened the evening that resulted in the young mother fighting for her life, and paramedics and hospital doctors fighting to save her.
The 30-year-old woman had been behind the wheel of her Ford Everest SUV travelling west on Maraju Yakapari Rd with four children inside, when a Ford Ranger ute travelling east allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road smashing head-on into the other vehicle.
It is understood the Ford Everest was destroyed in the collision that occurred about 5.42pm on Tuesday, December 3.
Forensic Crash Unit Senior Constable Mark Siddall said the driver of the ute, a 24-year-old Richmond man, had returned a positive roadside reading.
“It is so preventable,” Senior Constable Siddall said.
“It is another preventable crash destroying the Christmas of a family just because somebody doesn’t take responsibility.”
Senior Constable Siddall confirmed “charges are pending”, but no one had been charged yet.
It is likely the driver will be charged with aggravated dangerous driving.

Her four toddlers received minor injuries in the crash and were also taken to hospital.
