A sly thief has tried to hoodwink their victim, replacing gold bullion in a bedroom drawer with a heavy padlock.
A quantity of gold was taken from a bag inside the drawer at a North Mackay home, with the theft only discovered and reported on Wednesday.
Mackay police believe it was taken sometime in the past month.
A standard gold bar in Australia weighs one ounce (0.02kg) with the Perth Mint – the largest in Australia – pricing it at $2692.58.
A 10 ounce bar (0.283kg) costs $26,783.16 and a five ounce (0.141kg) sells for $13,417.91.
Bullion is typically imprinted with the mint’s logo, along with inscriptions of the bar’s weight and purity.
The Perth Mint website states there are two major types of Australian gold bars, either minted or cast bars.
“Minted bars are produced by stamping blank bars, giving them a sleek and shiny look,” the website states.
“Cast bars are produced by pouring liquid gold into molds, making each bar unique and giving them an aged, rustic appearance.
“Either type makes a great addition to your holdings, and both offer a very different physical look.”
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the theft, believed to have occurred between February 16 and March 16, to phone Crime Stoppers.
