Moranbah East State School set on fire fourth time in four months

Fireys have been called to the small primary school in a rural Queensland mining town four times since September.

Firefighters were called to Moranbah East State School following reports of a building on fire.

Two fire crews found a door smouldering on arrival and police were tasked to find two boys allegedly seen fleeing the school about 3.40pm on Saturday.

It is the fourth time since September that fireys have been called to the school.

Fire crews battled a blaze that threatened to wreak havoc on the rest of the school campus about 6pm on September 24.

Fireys worked to control the fire which reports indicated caused only minor damage to a building.

On October 8, firefighters were called to what would be the third fire in less than three weeks.

The school had previously been closed because of two suspicious fires during the school holidays.

An ongoing police investigation meant the school was not able to reopen to students when holidays ended on the Tuesday, with classes resuming on the Thursday after a damage assessment was expected to be completed.

Earlier that week a Department of Education spokesman confirmed the two previous fires occurred over the two-week school break, with police ruling them suspicious.

“The fires have resulted in significant damage to two school buildings affecting a number of classrooms and learning spaces,” he said at the time.

“The school is working with the Queensland Police Service in their investigations.

“Repair work has commenced and in the meantime, the department is in the process of installing new, temporary classrooms to restore the school to normal operation as soon as possible.”

Fire crews on Saturday handed the building back to the school principal and QPS about 4.20pm.

Police are continuing to patrol the area for the alleged offenders.
