Man allegedly threatens arson at Whitsundays property

Emergency service crews responded to a situation in the Whitsundays where a man reportedly threatened to light a house on fire.

A man has been taken into custody after allegedly threatening to light a house on fire in the Whitsundays.

Emergency service crews including police and firefighters were called to the property between Bowen and Airlie Beach about 10.30am Monday.

It is understood the man had in his possession a welding torch and smoke could be spotted from the rear of the property.

It is further understood the man had a 44-gallon drum on the back of a ute which he was threatening to use to accelerate the flames.

Police arrested the man about 11am and were taking him to a Whitsundays’ region watch house.

It is understood clothing had been set on fire but any flames had since been extinguished.

Firefighters were called off the scene.
