UPDATE 3.30PM: Mackay police are warning drug traffickers they are fooling themselves if they think hiding out in a rural area is a “safe haven”.
Speaking about the drug raid at an Eton home on Wednesday, Mackay CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Jack Savage said police found 10.77g of methamphetamine, 182g of marijuana and 0.4g of cocaine, $540 in cash, nun chucks and an antipersonnel spray.
Police charged a 44-year-old Kinchant Dam man with 11 drug-related offences after chasing him through multiple neighboring properties including darting between a barb-wired fence.
Sergeant Savage said the Kinchant Dam Rd raid would likely lead to more arrests and charges.
“As a result of what’s been uncovered, and obviously other investigative strategies that we’ve got in place, there’s a high possibility that other charges are forthcoming,” he said.
“The investigators don’t just rest on their laurels and stop at this one.”
Sergeant Savage said detectives would continue targeting rural areas for serious drug matters.
“Those specific areas, offenders consider them a bit of a haven, an area where they can conduct discreet activity without being noticed.
“This just highlights that isn’t the case.”
He said he could not disclose how police learned of the Kinchant Dam property but said they took all information reported to police seriously.
INITIAL 2pM: A man’s desperate bid to flee police searching a rural property came undone when he was arrested in bushland near Eton.
Detectives chased a man through barbed wire after executing a search warrant at a Kinchant Dam Rd property at Eton.
Police allegedly found large quantities of methylamphetamine as well as cocaine and marijuana inside the property.
Officers’ bodyworn camera recorded the moment police broke down doors inside the home and spoke with two people inside.
It later showed two detectives chase a man through the barbed wire fence and into dense bushland where he was arrested.
The 44 year old was charged with 11 drug-related offences including one count of trafficking methylamphetamine, and possessing dangerous drugs: methylampethamine, cocaine and cannabis.
He was also charged with possessing anything used in the commission of a crime including phones, scales, a cryovac machine and clip seal bags; possessing utensils used in connection with smoking dangerous drugs including glass pipes, water pipes and a grinder; and possessing property suspected of being proceeds under the Drugs Misuse Act.
He was charged with failing to properly dispose of a needle, obstructing police, acquiring a restricted nunchaku and unlawful possession of a category R weapon, being a antipersonnel spray substance.
The man was scheduled to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on Thursday.
“Detectives continue to target serious drug matters in rural areas,” he said.
