A former Mackay Cutters player pleaded to keep his licence after displaying appalling behaviour in two separate “serious” road rage incidents.

Beaudan Phillip Dixon claimed he would lose his job as a self employed disability worker and have to move from Mackay if his licence was disqualified for what Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne labelled “poor behaviour”.

Both incidents occurred months apart in 2023.

About 9.10pm on Mackay 13 Dixon tailgated another driver on Mackay Bucasia Rd coming up to the Holts Rd intersection.

Prosecutor Sheena Gravina said after both vehicles exited the roundabout Dixon pulled to the left of the victim and thrown an unknown object at the moving Nissan Pathfinder, which had struck the front passenger side causing scratches to the panel.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard Dixon then veered into the right lane in front of the Pathfinder and driven off and out of sight.

The second incident happened about 7am Wednesday, October 25 – the victim had been travelling on Victoria St in a Kia Sportage when he stopped at the Sydney St intersection traffic lights.

Dixon, who had been travelling in the same direction, pulled alongside the victim, exited his car and punched the driver’s side mirror of the Sportage causing it to smash.

Why? He later told police, who had been stopped behind the vehicles, the victim driver had cut him off on the Carlyle St roundabout.

Dixon told officers he leaned on this horn until catching up with the vehicle at the traffic lights.

The court heard both offences were labelled as “serious” and Ms Gravino said probation was an option.

Dixon, 27, pleaded guilty to reckless driving and wilful damage on a previous appearance on December 19 and the court heard those pleas were maintained.

Robert Beamish, of McKay’s Solicitors, said his client worked privately as a disability support worker and if he lost his licence would not be able to remain in Mackay.

The court heard Dixon was born in Tamworth, but later moved to Mackay where he played first grade football including one year with Mackay Cutters and was now playing with Sarina.

Mr Beamish submitted his client had a limited criminal and traffic history and was already attending support services of his own accord.

The court heard Dixon had attended two counselling sessions already and planned for this to be ongoing.

“They’re both road rage type incidents,” Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne said.

“I’m sure most people that use motor vehicles … are sick of these types of incidents.

“It just demonstrates particularly poor behaviour by people such as yourself.”

Mr Byrne accepted they were timely pleas and said Dixon had taken steps to address his issues.

“It seems to me as if you’re in the process of following through with some self rehabilitation,” he said.

Dixon was fined $1700 for both offences and no action was taken against his licence, but convictions were recorded for both offences.
