Mackay’s cycling community is in shock after one of their own was forced off a Mackay road in a shocking early morning armed robbery.

Detective Acting Inspector Chris Eaton revealed the offenders – three men and a woman, were brandishing a knife and a piece of wood before stealing the rider’s expensive training bike.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the 51-year-old victim, who was described as “a mate, a husband, a father”.

So far $820 of the $10,000 goal has been raised in just over 24 hours.

It is understood it was only the third time the man had ridden his new bike - labelled his “dream bike” - which he had been in the process of buying for about eight months.

He had been out for an early morning ride on January 21 when about 4.30am an SUV forced him off Maraju Yakapari Rd, near the Dumbleton Weir.

Detective Inspector Eaton said the group got out of the vehicle and “threatened (him) with a plank of wood and a knife”.

The offenders then stole his expensive bike and some cash before driving off.

Mackay Cycling Club road co-ordinator Luke Schatkowski said the community was in shock over the incident.

“He’s one of the people who help out all the time when needed,” Mr Schatkowski said.

“There’s plenty of people who ride at that time so we can get our training done and off the road before the traffic increases … and the heat.

“We’re always getting cars beeping their horns … the fact that they’ve pulled up.”

Mr Schatkowski said the man had been look at the bike that had been stolen for about eight months.

“They’re not an easy bike to get.”

Detective Inspector Eaton said a RAV4 was used in the roadside armed robbery.

He said police were calling on the community for any dashcam footage of the area around the time of the offending or any information about the incident.
