Detectives are investigating reports a car was sprayed by a firearm in terrifying scenes outside a South Mackay home, with owners reporting they heard ‘two loud bangs’ before finding their battered vehicle.

Detectives are investigating reports a car was shot up outside a South Mackay home, with the owners reporting they “heard two loud bangs” before finding their vehicle riddled with bullet marks.

Police have confirmed initial investigations suggest that between 3.30am and 3.50am Sunday, an unknown firearm discharged pellets into the back of a white Toyota Yaris parked in the front yard of a Paradise Street property.

Those responsible left the scene.

Detective Acting Inspector Chris Eaton said the occupants “heard two loud bangs” about 3.30am but thought it might just be a car backfiring.

An inspection of the vehicle in the morning revealed damage consistent with a firearm being discharged into the rear of the vehicle, Inspector Eaton said.

Multiple impact marks and dents are visible at the rear corner, on the rear windscreen above the panel and to the roof.

No one was physically injured.

“Police are trying to ID a motive in relation to the incident,” Inspector Eaton said.

“The use of a firearm in a public place is always a high level of concern and something that will result in immediate police investigation and response.”

Police are appealing for public assistance in their investigation into the matter.
