A Mackay dad has been banned from attending any hardware store in the region after allegedly stealing about $14,000 worth of items in the past six months.

The accused sticky-fingered bandit, Jesse Roy Martin, recently applied for bail in Mackay Magistrates Court over allegations he stole a Makita brushless eight-piece power tool set worth just under $2400 from the Bunnings at Paget on June 14, 2025.

He is charged with one count of stealing, but Legal Aid Queensland duty solicitor Ancilla Seethya told the court her client was contesting the allegation.

The court heard Mr Martin was in a show cause position because he was already on bail for an indictable offence when he allegedly committed this latest offence.

This meant he must show why he was an acceptable risk to be released on bail.

Ms Seethya said her client had no property offending history but there were entries for failing to appear.

She said the 29-year-old was in the process of being a formal carer for his partner and he also had one child for whom he paid child support.

She also said it was accepted if her client was convicted of the offending, jail time would be in range but whether or not actual custody or a suspended sentence was imposed was open.

The court heard Martin had allegedly stolen $14,000 worth of property since January 1, 2025

“Which in a regional community is significant,” Magistrate Linda Bradford-Morgan said.

“He’s unemployed, he’d not buying tools for employment.”

Ms Bradford-Morgan allowed bail but imposed a number of strict conditions including that he “not go to any Bunnings store in the Mackay region or any hardware retailer in the region that sells power tools”.

The court heard he was banned from going within 50m of any hardware store while on bail.

Mr Martin must also abstain from illicit substances and would undergo testing as part of his bail conditions, report twice a week and comply with residential conditions.

The charges were adjourned to later this month.
