A mother will have to face the supreme court after she was found to be mentally “fit” over allegedly trying to kill her teen daughter by stabbing her multiple times.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of stabbing the 17 year old girl in the chest six times on July 18, 2022 at a Dysart address.
She is charged with attempt to murder (domestic violence offence), common assault, and serious assault resisting or obstructing a police officer or a person acting in aid of a police officer and has been held in custody on remand for three years.
Legal Aid Queensland solicitor Danny Yarrow told Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday the case had been “tracking through the Mental Health Court” and had been finalised on June 20.
Mr Yarrow said the order made was that she was “fit and of sound mind” and initially requested a two months adjournment so the woman’s new Townsville-based Legal Aid team could go through the material.
But Magistrate Linda Bradford-Morgan raised concern over the length of the adjournment given the woman had been in custody since mid 2022, and was reluctant to allow for two months.
The court heard she was currently at the Townsville Women’s Correctional Centre.
Mr Yarrow said the woman’s new lawyers were briefed last week and instead requested one month adding it was expected instructions would be taken for a bail application.
The matter was adjourned to later this month and the woman’s appearance was excused.
