A popular Mackay lookout was closed as police investigated following a tragic discovery on Wednesday afternoon.

Police, fire and paramedics were on scene after passersby discovered a body on the rocks at the bottom of Lamberts Lookout.

Acting Sergeant Carl Butcher said emergency services still had few details about the deceased as a retrieval operation raced against the tide.

¨Unfortunately, we have come to an incident here at the lookout where it looks like members of the public have located a deceased male down the edge of the cliff,¨ Act Sgt Butcher said.

¨Here at Lamberts Lookout, off the edge of the cliff here it’s quite rocky.

“We have the tide coming in at the moment (and) the weather is not too good, so we have got a couple of factors playing against us right now.

“(So) we have got some specialist emergency services here, because where he is at the moment in quite a precarious location.”

Queensland Fire and Rescue Services and Queensland Ambulance Service personnel were on scene to assist with the extrication of the body.

It is understood emergency services needed specialist rope access to the site because of the location.

Lamberts Beach itself was briefly closed as the retrieval continued.

“If you are in crisis and need help, please reach out,¨ Acting Sergeant Butcher said.

“Please talk to support services.

“Please talk to emergency services.

“We are here to help and we can put you in touch with the right people.”

The matter is still under investigation and has become a matter for the coroner.
