Emergency crews called to crash on Mackay Eungella Rd at Mirani

Police are investigating allegations a stolen vehicle caused a crash that blocked a major roadway for several hours and trapped the other driver in his vehicle.

Police are investigating allegations a stolen vehicle crossed into the wrong lane and crashed into an oncoming car, blocking a major roadway for several hours and trapping the other driver in his vehicle.

Mackay Forensic Crash Unit’s Sergeant Michael Hollett said a man in his 50s had been driving his teen son to work when it is alleged another vehicle heading in the opposite direction moved into the wrong lane.

The two vehicles collided about 5.22am Wednesday on Mackay Eungella Rd, at the corner of Fordyces Rd, at Marian.

Both vehicles were significantly damaged and the 52-year-old driver was initially trapped in the driver’s seat.

Fire crews had to use cutting equipment to free him from the wreck.

Sergeant Hollett said the father and son had been travelling east and the alleged stolen vehicle was heading west from Marian towards Mirani.

Multiple emergency service crews including fire, ambulance and police were called to the scene and the roadway was blocked in both directions for several hours.

Diversions were put in place at Mirani Bolden Rd and Otterburn Conners Rd.

Paramedics treated the second driver, who was in the alleged stolen vehicle, for facial injuries and wrist pain, and he was taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The 52 year old was taken to hospital in a stable condition with leg and hip pain, his son was also taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police are investigating the crash and calling for any witnesses with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
