Emergency crews called after blaze rips through Berserker home

A woman who lives near a vacant house destroyed by what she described as a 'ball of fire' has said the flames sounded like a "roar".

A fire destroyed a house at the corner of Burnett and Spike streets in Berserker at 4am on October 21.

A woman who lives near a vacant house destroyed by what she described as a 'ball of fire' has said the flames sounded like a "roar".

The nearby neighbour who asked to remain anonymous said she and her husband noticed the house on the corner of Burnett and Spike streets ablaze about 3.50am.

“We heard the dogs barking,” she said.

“After that we heard some very loud pops.

“My husband was the first one out and he said ‘the house across the road is on fire - call the firies’. And that’s exactly what I did.
“You could just hear the roar of the flames.”
She also said the house had been vacant for “quite some time.”

A crime scene has been declared as police determine whether the cause of the fire was suspicious.

Multiple emergency services were called about 4am including eight fire crews, police and paramedics following reported a house was on fire at the corner of Burnett and Spike streets.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said they received a call just after 4am about a two-storey timber house fully alight.

Eight crews attended the incident, with firemen working simultaneously to extinguish the house fire and protect nearby structures.

The blaze was extinguished after 5am.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said everyone was out of the property by the time the fire took the house.

Initial indications suggested at one point the flames were close to powerlines, but crews were able to get the fire under control.
