A man who filmed his partner having sex with two dogs told his lawyer he ‘didn’t understand’ the vile act was illegal, as both avoided custodial sentences.

Crystal May Hoare engaged in penile intercourse with the two dogs while her then partner Jay Wade Veenstra filmed.

Police learned about the pair’s offending when Hoare went to officers in relation to a different matter and came across texts where she was asking Veenstra to delete certain things off his phone.

Mackay District Court heard he responded with: “Don’t worry no one is going to see my dog f---ing you”.

When officers spoke to Veenstra he told them he did not think having sex with a dog was illegal and the court heard he did “little to explain why he would involve himself in this kind of conduct”.

Both pleaded guilty to three counts of bestiality that occurred in on October 18, 2021, June 6, 2022 and October 25, 2022.

“It’s plain this is concerning behaviour,” crown prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher said, submitting for probation orders for each.

Anyone convicted of bestiality can face up to seven years jail.

Defence barrister Scott Moon, for Hoare who is now aged 38, said his client had “what can only be described as quite a traumatic upbringing”.

“She’s suffered and struggled throughout her life,” Mr Moon said, adding he had been taking medication for PTSD and had been admitted to mental health residential facilities in the past 12 months.

Defence barrister Scott McLennan, for Veenstra, pushed for a fine over probation arguing his client had a lesser role in the offending.

“I don’t buy that,” Judge Terry Gardiner said.

“He participated by videotaping it.”

Judge Gardiner added Veenstra “doesn’t seem to appreciate how wrong it is”.

“He does,” Mr McLennan said, adding his client just “didn’t understand it was illegal”.

Judge Gardiner said he was satisfied Veenstra was an “active participant by filming the activity”.

Both were placed on two years probation. Convictions were recorded against Hoare because of her previous criminal history, but not against Veenstra.
