Reports of a crab pot war south of Mackay has surfaced after two boats allegedly collided when a number of pots were interfered with in the lead up to Christmas.
A police spokeswoman said the alleged crash happened at Charon Point, about 290km south of Mackay, about 7.30pm on December 16.
She said police have launched an investigation into the crash and “a number of crab apparatus” which had been interfered with.
Police are working to determine the exact number of pots which had been disturbed.
“Police are aware that a number of professional fishermen operate in this area and while is a competitive industry, all operators are must comply with relevant state and Commonwealth legislation,” the spokeswoman said.
“There are rules that govern commercial vessel operation and rules that govern fishing practices.”
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority will be working with police in the investigation.
Charges have not yet been determined.
Police would like to remind all vessel operators of their obligation to operate their vessel in a safe and professional manner.
They have asked any reports of interfering with fishing apparatus should be lodged with the Fishwatch Hotline on 1800 017 116.
