A man accused over a violent Mackay bashing that left a neighbour fighting for his life has made a bid for freedom as his matters have been referred to the Mental Health Court.

Adam Nicholas Goedhart, 32, is charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm over an incident about 1.50am on November 4, 2021 at McAlister St.

Police allege officers went to a housing complex where they found Ian George Raines, 60, with significant head injuries.

As a result, Mr Goedhart was arrested and charged – the offence carried a maximum of life imprisonment for anyone convicted.

Mackay Magistrates Court on Monday heard the case had been suspended as matters had been transferred to the mental health court and as such Mr Goedhart was making a bail application.

He has been in custody since November 4, 2021 – about 284 days.

Defence solicitor Rosie Varley said there could be lengthy delays in the Mental Health Court process.

“My understanding is that the delays … can be up to two years,” she said.

Acting Magistrate Athol Kennedy said the bail objection affidavit disclosed “a really bizarre … unusual sort of behaviour”.

The court heard Mr Goedhart was also subject to a mental health order and his workers had the authority to contact police to ensure he complied with his treatment.

Ms Varley said if granted bail her client indicated he was willing to comply with any conditions and did not intend to return to the Mackay region, but live with his mother in the Brisbane area.

Matters were adjourned to Wednesday for a decision.
