Fire crews were called to a grass fire east of Moranbah on the Peak Downs Highway near Broadlea and Poitrel rds after 1pm Sunday.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said while the fire was initially reported as ‘not threatening’, it had tripled in size within an hour prompting crews to ask for additional support.
There are currently three fire crews on scene, and with a fourth en route.
It is understood the fire which was initially 100 meters long, now stretched to one kilometres in length – and while of it was smouldering there was still a large section on fire.
There are two fire crews, plus rural fire service personnel on site who were able to use a grader machinery from a local farmer, while two fire trucks are currently in use.
It’s understood the emergency crews are currently working with the Isaac Regional Council to secure a water tank.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police were called to put traffic control in place, but are still on the way and were not able to say how big the closure might be.
