Hire devastates East Mackay home

Smoke was still rising from an East Mackay home at 10am Sunday after it was destroyed by a fire overnight.

Emergency services were called to a Goldsmith St house near the intersection with Evans St just after 2.30am following reports of a structure engulfed in flames.
The house, which had reportedly been abandoned for some time, had flames billowing from the roof and bursting from the windows by the time the three Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crew arrived on the scene.

Parts of the structure collapsed as fireys worked to extinguish the blaze and paramedics assessed a male in his 30s with head, neck and ear way burns.

A bystander, who wished to remain nameless, reported that he was awoken by the blaze just before 2.30am and saw it from his window before calling triple zero.

The bystander reported that he saw a man lying on the ground by the front of the house.

“I couldn’t cross the road, the flames were that bad,” he said.

“He got up and people tried to help him but he must have been in pain from the burns on the side of his face.”

The fire was extinguished by 3.30am and the male patient was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious condition.

Queensland Police declared a crime scene and are conducting an investigation, and a QFES investigator is expected to attend the scene later today.

This comes hours after fire ravaged a Mackay caravan park.
More to come as the investigation unfolds.
