Community shares mixed feelings about project, with some giving thumbs up to jobs while others are concerned it won’t lift off.

BOWEN residents have weighed in on a proposed rocket launch site at Abbot Point.

Community members shared their opinions after the State Government announced it would begin targeted consultation on the proposal for an orbital rocket launch site near Abbot Point.

Reactions were mixed as some believed it would be good if the project created jobs in the region, while others were concerned about whether the project would lift off.

Here's what they had to say:

Virginia Hansen from Bowen supported the idea of creating new jobs in the region.

"If it brings jobs to town, that's a good thing," she said.

Jason Roach of Bowen thought a new project would give the town a boost.

"Bring it on!" he said.

"A few more jobs would help get the place going a bit."

However, Debbie Dennis from Bowen had a couple of mixed feelings.

"As long as it's not an attraction to be targeted in a war or something and if it's not hurting the environment, then it could be good," she said.

Readers also shared their opinions on the Bowen Independent Facebook page.

Carol Nicol was concerned about whether the project would get off the ground.

"Still waiting 20 years later for the new marina to be built in Bowen … Still waiting, like everything else that's supposed to happen in Bowen but never has," she commented.

Brian Woods shared her concern.

"As usual it won't happen … big media blitz and then nothing as nothing ever happens in Bowen," he said.

According to Philomene Bell, the project was a nice idea.

"One can only dream," she said.

But for Colleen Lott, it was good to see something different making headlines.

"Well this is certainly something else to focus on!," she said.
