Three people, including a child, were injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving a truck on a Queensland highway on Saturday. Two suffered life-threatening wounds.

Emergency services were called to the Peak Downs Highway near Coppabella, near Mackay, shortly before 3.30pm amid reports of the crash, which brought traffic in both directions to a standstill.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the crash involved a fuel tanker and had left a ute lying on its side.

A woman in her 30s was initially trapped by her legs in one of the vehicles. She was later flown to Mackay Hospital in a life-threatening condition. It’s believed she sustained a significant arm injury. She is now in a serious but stable condition.

A man in his 20s suffered multiple injuries and was also flown to Mackay Hospital in a life-threatening condition. He is now stable.

A female child who suffered bruising to her pelvic and abdominal area was taken by ambulance to Mackay Hospital in a stable condition.

The highway was reopened just before 8pm.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said investigations were still ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
