‘It is disturbing that you drove that distance with a reading of this nature … you are a very young person [with] everything ahead of you.’

A young Mackay student who had eight drinks before getting behind the wheel for a snack was slammed for her “disturbing” behaviour.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard 21-year-old Georgia Gemma King returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.172 in the early hours of April 2.

Prosecutor Harry Coburn said Mackay police found the nursing student sitting beside her car, which had a flat tyre, at 1.25am along Broadsound Street in Paget.

He said King had earlier drank a six-pack of beer as well as two flutes of wine over five hours after returning home from work to her Walkerston home.

Solicitor Geoff Govey, of Taylors Solicitors, asked Acting Magistrate John Aberdeen to consider increasing King’s fine and reducing the disqualification period to ease inconvenience to her upcoming university placements.

“She stopped drinking at 11.30 (pm), and then in fact went to sleep,” Mr Govey said.

“She got up, she was hungry, she made the foolish decision to go for something to eat.

“Unfortunately she had a flat tyre on the way — really her undoing in a lot of ways.”

Mr Aberdeen interjected to say if King had kept driving, something “tragically worse” could have occurred.

“You drove from Walkerston into town, along the Peak Downs Highway, that is a major thoroughfare,” he said.

“It is disturbing that you drove that distance with a reading of this nature. It is a very high reading.

“You are a very young person and to have everything ahead of you.”
