St Patrick’s College five-eighth Josh Toby has exploded into the spotlight of the Aaron Payne Cup with a stirring performance in the Mackay derby.
The Mackay Cutters Connell Cup prospect proved he is a star on the rise having a hand in four tries and scoring two of his own in the 66-0 shellacking of Mackay State High.

While the plaudits have showered down on his halves partner Adam McSherry - and rightly so - in recent years, Toby proved he was no shrinking violet in the shadows of his mate.
McSherry also imposed his own will over the contest, with his running game coming to the fore as St Patrick’s terrorised the Mackay State High left edge defence.
But it wasn’t just on that one edge where they had their way.
St Patrick’s were a molten knife slicing through a buttery Mackay State High defence at will for most of the contest.
It was a result that was well beyond doubt before the half-time whistle, with a 10-minute blitz early in the match foreshadowing a one-sided result.
A knock on coming out of their own end in the third minute proved incredibly costly for the Mackay State High side.
The next time they touched the ball was more than 10 minutes later, and they were 20 points down on the scoreboard.

In that period St Patrick’s ran in four tries in four straight sets covering the length of the field with ease thanks to the hard-running of their men in the middle and the fleet footwork of star fullback Lachlan Brown.
Winger Clavin Ramos finished with a flashy double on the right edge, while representative prop Mark Morrow imposed his will on the Mackay State High defence late in the contest to finish with two tries of his own.
It capped off a big day for St Patrick’s College, who scored a 26-10 win in the Cowboys Challenge clash.
PREVIEW
Mackay State High School will get its first taste of NRL Schoolboy Cup action for 2025 when it takes on local rivals St Patrick’s College on Thursday.
The two sides will clash in a double-header with the Cowboys Challenge at 1.30pm followed by the Payne Cup at 3pm.

After having the bye in round one, Mackay SHS will make its season debut off the back a solid 2024 campaign where it came away with four wins and two losses from six outings.
However, on the other side of the field Thursday will be a St Pat’s outfit with a point to prove this week.
Last year’s Payne Cup runners-up were dealt with comfortably by rugby league powerhouse Kirwan State High School in the opening round, going down 28-6 in the grand final rematch.
After showing some early fight they eventually succumbed to an explosive Bears side.
With plenty of talent on offer in their line-up including Adam McSherry and Mark Morrow, St Pat’s will be eager to make amends in short order and get their season back on track.
The Aaron Payne Cup clash will be streamed live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 3pm, with the Cowboys Challenge game set to go for 2pm.
