A young man has died following a single vehicle crash along the Peak Downs Highway west of Mackay on Monday night.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the 31-year-old had been travelling westbound when his vehicle went around a corner, lost control, rolled and left the road.

The QPS spokeswoman said a member of the public reported spotting the upturned vehicle to police about 10km from the Nebo township about 11.20pm.

“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 31-year-old Nebo man died at the scene,” the QPS has stated.

“Investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing.”

The Isaac region, as well as the surrounding Mackay, Whitsunday and Central Highlands regions are on high alert as wild weather continues to lash Central and North Queensland.

The weather bureau has warned residents to brace for a 500mm deluge as multiple highways are cut, evacuation centres open, and more than 100 roads are inundated.

The river at Gargett, west of Mackay in the Pioneer Valley, was raging over Cattle Creek on Monday afternoon and into the evening with fears livestock had been swept away.

Then in Mackay, residents are preparing for floodwaters to inundate the CBD as the Pioneer River is predicted to peak at 7am and impact drainage.

It follows several rescues over the weekend and dozens of cars seen entering floodwaters.
