A 63-year-old sugarcane farm worker had a lucky escape after his cane haulout truck rolled a number of times and plunged into a dam.

The crash comes as the road toll in the Mackay/Whitsunday region has jumped to 13 people already this year.

A RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter was called in by Queensland Health at 2:30pm on Thursday to attend the incident at a Bloomsbury property, 90km from Mackay, after cane workers called triple-0.

A RACQ spokeswoman said the Mackay man was driving down a hill on a cane haulout vehicle when his front-left tyre blew out causing him to lose control.

“The vehicle rolled several times about 30 metres downhill and into a dam on the property,” the spokeswoman said.

The worker managed to extricate himself from the cabin of the partially flooded vehicle and slowly dragged himself up the hill to let other harvesting workers know of the incident.

The helicopter was originally tasked to the accident scene north of Bloomsbury, but was redirected mid-flight to meet ambulance crews with the patient at the Lakeside Airport.

The patient was flown to Mackay Base Hospital and is in a stable condition.
