Mackay fatal crashes: Dysart collision claims life of Chris Goodwin

Loved ones are mourning the death of a husband and dad in a tragic Father’s Day collision on a major roadway linking two Queensland mining towns.

Loved ones are mourning the death of “one of the best” after a horror Father’s Day crash claimed the life of beloved Pioneer Valley husband and dad Chris Goodwin.

The 45-year-old had been driving a 4WD that collided with a road train on Saraji Rd, near Phillips Creek bridge about 4.30am on Sunday, September 3.

Confronting photos reveal the catastrophic damage to the vehicle Mr Goodwin had been driving.

Mackay’s Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the crash, which brought the districts road toll to 13 for 2023 and the eighth in eight weeks.

Initial reports suggest the coal truck towing a trailing and the 4WD had been travelling in opposite directions when the trailer rolled colliding with Mr Goodwin’s vehicle.

He was rushed to Moranbah Hospital but tragically died hours later.

A friend has since posted a tribute on Mr Goodwin’s Facebook page saying “RIP Chris Goodwin one of the best gone too soon”, while another has questions “why is it still happening”.

Just a week before on August 27 father of three James Rolph, 46, lost his life in a collision with a road train on Moranbah Access Rd.

Mr Rolph had been driving a prime mover when it and the road train, which had been travelling in opposite directions, collided about 9.40am.

Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.

Saraji Rd is a major roadway linking two Bowen Basin mining towns – Dysart and Moranbah.

In July this year a horror crash between two utes and a tanker left two of the vehicles unrecognisable.

Callan Davis, 29, had been behind the wheel in one of the utes on his way to work when the multi-vehicle crash occurred on Saraji Rd at 5.20am on July 4.

Shocking photos show the carnage caused by the head-on impact, which resulted in the major thoroughfare being closed for almost 12 hours.

The Ausroad Plant Services worker suffered serious injuries to his leg and was trapped for a time inside the vehicle.

Fire crews had to remove him and he was taken to Moranbah Hospital before being flown to Townsville University Hospital for further treatment.
