A driver seriously injured when two utes and a tanker collided in a horror crash that left two vehicles unrecognisable on a major roadway between two Bowen Basin mines is back in Mackay after spending weeks in hospital.

Callan Davis, 29, had been behind the wheel in one of the utes on his way to work when the multi-vehicle crash occurred on Saraji Rd at 5.20am on July 4.

Shocking photos show the carnage caused by the head-on impact, which resulted in the major thoroughfare being closed for almost 12 hours.

The Ausroad Plant Services worker suffered serious injuries to his leg and was trapped for a time inside the vehicle.

Fire crews had to remove him and he was taken to Moranbah Hospital before being flown to Townsville University Hospital for further treatment.

All vehicles had to be towed from the site. The roadway, which was closed for about 11 hours, was fully opened by 4.15pm.

Those close to the 29 year old have started a GoFundMe campaign to help him and his family with his recovery, which included his family home being modified.

The campaign has already raised $4425.

“Callan Davis is employed by Ausroad Plant Services who provides stemming operations for the Peak Downs Mine blast crew,” Matthew Clarke wrote in the crowdsourcing campaign.

“On July 4 Callen was involved in the multi vehicle collision that occurred on the Phillips creek bridge -Saraji road on his way to work.

“Thankfully Callan is on his way to recovery, he has recently been relocated from Townsville hospital to Mackay where his family home has been modified to support his temporary physical impairment.

“I’d like for this fundraiser to be made aware across our workforce to support Callan and his family during his long recovery that lays ahead.”

Saraji Rd is a major thoroughfare between Dysart and Moranbah.

It is estimated the closure of the bridge can cost the mining industry more than $12 million a day.

Phillips Creek Bridge has been the subject of a huge push for funding to replace one of the key road links within the Bowen Basin.

The state government allocated $18m to the bridge in its 2023-24 budget, with $5.9m booked for this financial year and $12.1m for post-2024 work.
