A 33-year-old driver is in critical condition with spinal injuries following a crash under heavy fog in the Bowen Basin on Thursday morning.

Police, paramedics, and firefighters were called to a two car crash on the Peak Downs Mine Rd at Winchester, near Moranbah, about 5.22am.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the crash involved a Toyota HiLux and a Toyota Camry with drivers of both vehicles unable to speak to police officers because of injuries.

She said both vehicles were “heavily damaged” with the Camry found off the roadway on a shoulder in overgrown grass with major damage to its front.

The HiLux was found 50m away from the Camry on the opposite shoulder.

The police spokeswoman said inside the HiLux was a driver from Mackay and a 55-year-old passenger from Bouldercombe. Both were taken to Dysart Hospital for further treatment.

The Camry driver was a 33-year-old man from Walterhall, west of Rockhampton, who the Royal Flying Doctor Service flew to Townsville Hospital.

An RFDS spokesman said the Walterhall man was in critical condition with spinal injuries.

A Townsville Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman said the man was in a stable condition as of 5.15pm Thursday.

The Camry’s 20-year-old female passenger from Mount Morgan was not injured in the crash.

Three people were initially trapped in the vehicles with debris from the collision completing blocking the road.

The road has since reopened.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
