Woman critically injured in Peak Downs Highway crash outside South Walker Creek Mine

A major mining highway was shut as first responders worked desperately to free a trapped driver who is now fighting for her life.

A woman has been critically injured after four vehicles collided outside a mine on the Peak Downs Highway at Strathfield southwest of Mackay.

The accident happened at the South Walker Creek Mine turn-off on Fitzroy Development Rd just after 5pm.

According to the Queensland Fire Department, one person was entrapped in a vehicle.

“One person was encapsulated,” the spokesman said.

“They’ve been extricated from the vehicle and are in the hands of QAS.”

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said four people were assessed at the scene, three men and a woman.

The woman suffered significant abdominal and leg injuries and was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition.

As of midday on Friday, she is in a stable condition at the hospital.

Two men with minor injuries were transported stable to the hospital, and a fourth person was uninjured.
Stanmore purchased the mine from BHP in 2022.
