Fitstop – 18 votes
Tying for fifth place, gym chain Fitstop scored 18 votes for the title of best gym.
Fitstop Mackay owners Tegan & Jerome Iakimo thanked their community for the support.
“The people who train within our four walls at Fitstop are the most incredible humans,” they said.
“Being able to be the best 50 mins of their day is such a privilege.”
World Gym Mackay – 18 votes
Tied with Fitstop with 18 votes, World Gym Mackay made it into the fifth place on the best gyms in Mackay list.
A World Gym Mackay spokesman thanked all their members for years of support.
Muscle Garden Health & Fitness Centre – 25 votes
Coming in at number four is Muscle Garden Health and Fitness Centre.
Zoe Adams, the Milton St gym’s business support officer, attributed the gym’s popularity to the safe environment staff strived to create.
“We’re very community oriented,” Ms Adams said.
Muscle Garden Health and Fitness hosts free classes for seniors and offers discounted rates for veterans and people with disability, which Ms Adams believes encouraged a sense of community.
A controversial policy of Muscle Garden, but one Ms Adams said enriched their community, is the dress code.
“We ask our members to have some modesty,” Ms Adams said.
“That means no crop tops and no booty shorts.”
Ms Adams said the policy was in place to help make gym goers more comfortable, particularly those with “body issues”.
“They can still wear singlets and shorts,” Ms Adams said.
“Just everyone’s a bit more covered up and people are a lot more comfortable coming in to our gym.”
Ms Adams said newcomers need to pick a schedule they can stick to if they’re serious about starting their fitness journey.
“Consistency is key, picking something you can stick to even if it’s once or twice a week,” she said.
F45 Training – 39 votes
Taking the bronze medal in our best gym poll with 39 votes is F45 Training.
A global fitness franchise, the Mackay branch is run by husband and wife team Lee and Kim Renshaw.
“Our little motto is team work makes the dream work,” Mr Renshaw said.
“That’s why we are the world's number one studio out of all F45 two years running.
“Little old Mackay out of 3000+ franchises.”
Mr Renshaw believed it’s the gym’s personal touch approach to customer service that keeps members coming back and said that he knows the name of every single member who walks through the door.
“As soon as you walk through the door, everything is prepared and ready,” Mr Renshaw said.
“The equipment is in perfect condition and we take pride in keeping the studio very clean, tidy and presentable.
“I like to call it F45 OCD.”
Mr Renshaw said potential members can start as “absolute beginners” and his coaches would help them get through the session and over any obstacle.
City fitness – 41 votes
Taking the silver medal is City Fitness Mackay.
City Fitness Customer Service Adviser Sophie Eden said she was incredibly grateful to the entire Mackay community and their loyal members.
“Their support over the years has been instrumental in shaping who we are today,” Ms Eden said.
Ms Eden said the secret to City Fitness’ success is the accessibility.
“Our variety of programs and amenities are suitable for all fitness levels,” she said.
“There’s something here for everyone.”
Ms Eden said being realistic about “your current lifestyle and goals” was the most vital thing to getting fit.
“The key is finding activities you enjoy and can fit into your daily routine.”
Torstein’s Functional Fitness and Health – 42 votes
The number one gym in Mackay for 2024 is Torstein’s Functional Fitness and Health.
Owner and operator Torstein Lappegard said his gym was “a small family and personal gym” that he had successfully run for nearly 14 years.
“I am self-employed but I have great help from my wife Karen and recently my son Sebastian and daughter Amelia,” Mr Lappegard said.
“I think my followers voted for me because they are a loyal, dedicated, small group who value their gym and their trainer.
“Some of my clients have been part of the gym since the very beginning.”
After learning he’d scored the top spot, Mr Lappegard said he asked his clients why they kept returning to the gym.
Responses ranged from the gym’s welcoming atmosphere, Mr Lappegard’s personal approach to training and his “innovative” approach to designing workouts.
Mr Lappegard’s best fitness advice was for gym goers to “just start and keep turning up”.
“Consistency and effort trumps most things,” Mr Lappegard.
Congratulations to Torstein’s Functional Fitness and Health and their team.
