A shocking “targeted” shooting at a Mackay sharehouse could have been “deadly” with two people inside when bullets went through several walls.
Members of the public and residents at a Slade Point Esplanade property called police about 7pm on Thursday to report “shots fired” at the property.
Mackay Detective Sen Sgt Chris Eaton said police were shocked at the scene saying it could have been an incredibly serious incident.
He said the shots had been powerful enough to travel through several walls.
“The projectiles from that incident have gone through the front wall of the house, then travelled through two further walls and lodged into the rear bedroom at the back,” he said.
“Realistically, any person from the front of that house to the back of that house could have been struck at the time,”
A 32-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man had been inside the house at the time shots were fired but “there might have been more”, Sen Sgt Eaton said adding they were still establishing the “particulars” of the investigation.
He also said there was no indication at this stage about what type of firearm was used or how many shots were fired.
“Witnesses recall hearing one distinctive loud bang,” he said.
No one was injured during the incident.
“We have no reason at this stage of believing it’s a random shooting,” he said.
“We will be looking at establishing whether it was the occupants of this particular premises who were targeted or perhaps people that were visiting that particular premises,”
Sen Sgt Eaton said the property was a sharehouse, with a number of rooms that were rented out to people and that at the time of the shooting “there were people in there going about their normal business”.
He said the house was in a residential area at the end of a no through road which indicated to investigative units that the shooting was likely not done at random but had been “targeted”.
“I have no doubt that there are members of the community out there who will know who has committed this offence or have strong suspicions about who has done that,”
“We ask them to contact the police and crime’s office,”
Investigations are continuing with police urging witnesses or anyone with relevant vision to come forward.
