Sarina police are investigating after a council vehicle was allegedly shot at while parked on the roadside, south of Mackay.

The incident occurred sometime from Wednesday afternoon or overnight at Koumala.

Mackay Regional Council employees had been involved in roadworks at Hatfield Rd and had finished for the day and some equipment was left at the site.

When the workers returned on Thursday morning they noticed damage to one of the vehicles that included a shot through a window.

The matter was reported to police about 10.30am.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed Sarina police were investigating a wilful damage complaint.

This publication contacted Mackay Regional Council for comment.

The council declined to comment as police investigations were ongoing.
