“A strong smell of gas” has forced the evacuation of several businesses in the Mackay CBD.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said crews were called to 224 Victoria St near the corner of Wellington St just before 10.35am Monday.
“They were called to a strong smell of gas,” the QFES spokeswoman said.
She said firefighters arrived at 10.45am after people had already begun evacuating the premises.
She added firefighters were yet to find any evidence of gas, with police and ambulance crews also called to the scene.
It is understood fire crews are also inspecting gas cylinders at the site.
