Gas examiners and fire officers spent several hours trying to locate the source of a strong smell of gas in North Rockhampton.

They were called to Elphinstone Street around 9.50am.

A staff member from Elfin House childcare said the gas examiner had visited their premises and moved on to St Mary’s School.

“We’re prepared to evacuate if we’re told to; in the meantime, we’re keeping all the kids inside,” she said.

Police units were patrolling the area in the event of an emergency.

QFES also visited the Natural Wonders Learning Centre on High Street, after lunchtime, before concluding the smell was coming from an industrial plant.

A spokesperson said they pinpointed the smell to Lakes Creek Road.
